After a week-long quarantine in a hotel in Punta Arenas, our cruise is finally underway! Being confined to a single room for a week has affected me twofold. First, it’s made me appreciate the comparatively large amount of space on the ship, which was decidedly not my reaction to arriving at a vessel for a long cruise in pre-COVID times. More importantly, coming from isolation has made me grateful to be around people, particularly those as nice as the SAGA34S science party and the crew of the R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa.
Last night, a group of us watched the sunset from the deck. Coming from quarantine, there was a sense of collective gratitude to be feeling the sea breeze and watching the waves reflect evening light. That is to say that spirits are high as we embark. I’m excited start collecting samples and deploying floats!
