Bruss Bus

Bruss Bus, a float adopted by Monte Vista High School, was deployed into the shimmering waters

October 24, 2024

Sometimes, the weather can be so peaceful. The ocean—at times a mighty force that makes me feel like a tiny insect—had taken on a calm stillness. On October 22, in these tranquil conditions, Bruss Bus (Float-ID #1569), was deployed into the shimmering waters. As we continue our journey southward toward Puerto Montt, Chile, we released the float at 38°S, 98°W. This deployment turned out to be one of the smoothest I’ve ever witnessed, a rare contrast to the usual challenges of the Southern Ocean that I’m accustomed to. Although I do have a soft spot for its wild, rough and dramatic temperament, it’s refreshing to experience such perfect weather.

Bruss Bus was adopted by the Marine Biology class at Monte Vista High School in Danville, California. Teacher Meghan Bruss says,

“My students chose this name because they wanted something that unified our two marine bio classes together, which apparently they thought was me (the teacher). So Bruss is my last name and they thought I have taken them all on a journey (like on a bus) through learning about the ocean and so the float will keep us all on that journey.”
