The women on board R/V Marcus G. Langseth met in front of the main research deck where the CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth) rosette is located between a shift break to celebrate International Women’s Day! This global celebration, proclaimed an International Day by the United Nations in 1977, acknowledges the political, cultural, economic, and social accomplishments of women around the world. Pictured above are (from left to right):
Anna Bruno is a technician at the University of Washington. She recently received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of California–Los Angeles, and on this cruise is measuring concentrations of anthropogenic gases such as chlorofluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride.
Clara Haughey-Gramazio is a technician at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science (RSMAS). She holds a master’s degree from the University of Miami and on this cruise is measuring pH.
Isabel Schaal is a recent graduate of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where she earned a master’s degree in Oceanography. On this cruise she is measuring concentrations of anthropogenic gases such as chlorofluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride.
Rachel Cohn holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California–Los Angeles in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and is currently a Research Associate at the University of Miami Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (CIMAS). She is measuring oxygen concentrations on this cruise.
Kristy McTaggart has a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography from the University of Washington. She is an experienced field oceanographer for NOAA at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) in Seattle and is CTD lead on PMEL-led GO-Ship cruises (CTD is shown in the background of the group picture). In addition, she calibrates and processes CTD temperature, salinity, and oxygen profiles.
EvaLynn Jundt holds a master’s degree in coastal and marine system science from Texas A&M University and is currently in their doctoral program studying carbon chemistry and ocean acidification using statistical and machine learning models. On this cruise she is measuring pH.
Teresa Kennedy holds a doctoral degree from the University of Idaho and is currently a professor at the University of Texas at Tyler and a master’s student in Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. She is a watchstander for the CTD, also measuring salts, d15N and d18O isotopes, and coordinating outreach efforts during this cruise.
Jennifer Aicher holds a master’s degree in chemical oceanography from the University of Miami and is currently working as a technician at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science (RSMAS). She is measuring oxygen concentrations on this cruise
Jesse Anderson holds a doctoral degree from the University of Washington and is currently a Research Scientist at Earth & Space Research. She is co-chief scientist of A13.5 and is leading float deployments.
Yifan Li is a postdoctoral visiting scholar at the University of Delaware. She is taking measurements of dissolved carbon dioxide and carbon isotopes during this cruise.
According to the United Nations, “International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on progress made and challenges ahead, as well as to celebrate the acts of courage and determination by women who have played an extraordinary role in the development of their communities and countries.” For more information about International Women’s Day see:
